Coccidiosis in Sheep and Goats

Coccidiosis in Sheep and Goats

Many folks think coccidia is a “worm” but in fact it is a protozoa from the Eimeria spp. family. While coccidia levels can vary from animal to animal they can cause issues in times of stress such as weaning, shipping or other changes such as diet. The young lambs and kids are most susceptible.

Signs

Diarrhea is when most people notice an issue.  At times it may contain mucus and or blood

Diagnosis

Coccidia Oosysts can be seen on a fecal float test, such as the ones that Farm Fecals provides.  As stated earlier it is common to see coccidia oosyts on a fecal test result, so consult your veterinarian.

Treatment

Consult your veterinarian for the best course of treatment.  Typically sulfa drugs are used and the whole herd should along with the animal showing symptoms.

Prevention

Clean barn, clean pasture, clean water all help lessen the chance of exposure.  However, oocysts can survive for months to years.  To lessen the risk of reaction to Coccidiosis, keep your herd happy and stress free!
